A Revery

Once upon a time, you and me were one
Like what many two people become
Your little brother made three in your big bed
And I’d hang off of the words you both said
Four times we could make up
But couldn’t heal through five break ups
Six six six trapped in hell
With eyes that only see the past, where I dwell

I think of that first smile that I gave you
We told a secret of our hearts in plain view
And sneaking out to your house at midnight
We’d barely sleep and I’d leave by first light
Walking naked through the streets
Psilocybes every two weeks
A passion poets speak of
I finally understand the term, “making love”

But life’s strange the way lives change
The little fights we overcame
Blew up, despite our very own desire
And spread across our days like a wildfire
Screaming in the pouring rain
Streaming tears in vain
A thick flow of jealousy
Will make a lover an enemy

Now I follow my street
To where the dirt and pavement meet
To leave my pride on the concrete
And feel the earth beneath my feet
Where I lay beneath a tree,
Gaze across the greenery,
And think about what it is
To be alive and lonely

Picking myself out of the remnants
Playing lost and found with the friendships
Haunted by the poetry we traded
It hurts worse than the words of hatred
And how your brother’s laugh echoes
And how the mark you gave me shows
More than enough proof you were here
Without the scars on my heart and left ear

Everyday it’s down my street
To where the dirt and pavement meet

Permanence is an utter lie
Love is a butterfly
It’ll flutter by
And all that remains
Are the scars and stains

Cracks reseal
Wounds will heal
Thoughts congeal
There’s new love to feel
And now all that’s left in me
Of an enemy
I’m setting free
But a memory
Just a revery
