A Time for Us
We first kissed on Halloween
2019
Man, she was a sight to be seen
Declared she was a sexy dinosaur
Asked if she could try on my wizard cap
I said, “Only if you wear the cape to match”
I’ll never forget how she gave ‘em back,
Brushing up so close to me
That was back before the danger
When you could still dance with a pretty stranger
She took my hand and a minute later
Our lips were dancing too
I’m still waiting for the next dance…
Will there be a time for us?
Will there be a time for us?
Underneath our disguises
I could sense a trust
Will there be a time for us?
The next few weeks were ours
Sharing stories and scars
She sang to me beneath the stars
I gave her a tour of my small town
Took her to the river to hop rocks
I barely caught her when she jumped across
We both went home in dripping socks
But man, did we laugh
And each moment was so alive
Getting lost in her smiling eyes
Especially the day of her return flight
When I was holding her one last time
I’m still waiting for the next chance…
Will there be a time for us?
Will there be a time for us?
When we were counting down the hours
I heard a question hushed
Will there be a time for us?
Then one day I got a call
Said she was released from the hospital
I felt like I dropped the ball
I never sent a card, didn’t even know
She got sick with her best friend
A whole month of pain within
Said she came close to the end
And her friend wasn’t so lucky
That’s when I realized
We won’t always recognize
Last goodbyes
I’m still waiting for the master plan…
Will there be a time for us?
Will there be a time for us?
After the mending of the world
And the settling of the dust
Will there be a time for us?
Back when we were dancing like magnets
I felt there must
Be a time for us
Sometimes we live unforgettable moments and when they’re over we’re left wondering if they were real, as if we just woke from a vivid dream. Rather than sing to the person in the song, I decided to write about her in third person, the way I’d tell a story to a friend. I chose that because I really just wanted to account for everything that happened. The simple events themselves were powerful enough to me that I thought they could speak for themselves.
